The White Rose cards have created a barrier that keeps Yugi's forces out of Britain, effectively keeping the Yorkists in control. In order to get back home the player needs all 16 of the "Rose cards." 8 Red Rose cards are held by the Lancastrians and the 8 White Rose cards by the Yorkists. However, Christian Rosenkreuz shows up and then the player decides which side he or she is going to be a part of. The player assumes the role of the Rose duelist, who has been summoned to aid the Lancastrians by Simon McMooran, a Scottish Druid at Stonehenge. Yami Yugi assumes the identity of the head of the Tudor dynasty, Henry Tudor, while Seto Kaiba represents the head of the Yorkist forces as Christian Rosenkreuz. For example, the character Bakura isn't based on a historical figure named Bakura. Some characters simply have the same or similar names as their anime/manga counterparts and aren't based on historical figures. Fans of the show and strategic gamers with perseverance should ante up everybody else should pass.Most of the characters are based on characters from the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime and manga, but given names and/or roles to portray a historical figure. Oh, and I have to mention the music-the melodic harpsichord battle tune is fine.for the first few hours. If you've never played a Yu-Gi-Oh! game before, it's possible that you'll lose for a good 10 hours or so before claiming your first victory. Weevil, the first boss, is easily as tough as Kaiba, your final opponent. Worse still, the steep learning curve will obliterate new players. Combining monster cards to create a more powerful deck is the key to winning battles, but trying to understand all of the unstated (and seemingly arbitrary) card-compatibility guidelines is a nightmare.

The problem is, it takes forever to learn how to play the damn thing. After all, the monster battles look fantastic and the game's strategic elements make for a surprisingly addictive experience. Players willing to put 20-plus hours into learning the rules of this crazy card-and-board-game hybrid will have a decent time. But here's the bottom line: While far from great and way too complicated for its own good, Duelists is reasonably deep and ultimately pretty satisfying. Fans of the franchise will scream bloody murder when they see this score, while casual gamers are gonna think the grade is at least a couple points too high. The card game itself doesn’t look very good, spells and monsters look fine but the CG animated snippets just break immersion. Combat itself is confusing at first, but once rules and victory or defeat conditions become clear, the game becomes very easy. Even at the time of its release its graphics weren’t impressive and were more in line with PlayStation One games. Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses is an older title and the visuals clearly display it.

Players are then tasked with assembling a deck and playing opponents in a turn-based, strategy, and set-up manner. Each player has a deck of cards composed of monsters, spells, and traps.

However here Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses takes a very bold move and retells - in a surprisingly unique fashion the English War of the Roses. The anime/manga itself is known for having characters from ancient Egypt play an important role in the plot of the original series.
